5 Things The Boss Wishes You Already Knew
Trade school taught you the craft. It didn’t teach you how to not get fired on week two.
Hey,
You can bend conduit like a wizard and still be “that guy” nobody wants on their crew.
We asked foremen and supers across our network one question: “What do rookies screw up that makes you regret hiring them?”
Their answers were brutal… and identical.
Here are the 5 unspoken rules they all wish you walked in knowing. Nail these and you’re not a helper—you’re the next lead.
Time Management Rushing = callbacks. Crawling = blown budgets. Ask once: “What’s a good pace for this task?” Then hit it. Prep your tools BEFORE you start. Zero trips to the truck.
Communication Silence kills. Over-talking annoys. Simple formula:
“Got it.”
Stuck >15 mins? Flag it.
Task done? “Finished. What’s next?”
Adaptability Plans change. Materials are late. Crew before you left a disaster. Don’t freeze or whine. Ask: “What’s the next most useful thing I can do right now?”
Problem-Solving Dumping problems on the boss = rookie. Bringing two possible fixes = future foreman. Even if your idea is wrong, you’re thinking.
Team Awareness Your mess becomes the next trade’s nightmare. Clean as you go. Stage materials for the guy after you. Ask: “How do you want this left?”
That’s it. Master these five and you’ll get the good jobs, the raises, and the respect—fast.
We incorporate these into our programs from day one (along with the actual skills and certs that get you hired).
Want to show up to your first day already ahead of 95% of rookies?
Book a 15-minute call with us. We’ll tell you exactly which program (or apprenticeship path) fits you and how to start asap.
P.S. These fav five didn’t come from a textbook. They came from 10,000+ real job postings and hundreds of pissed-off owners telling us exactly what they wish rookies already knew.
Employers spell it out — we just listen.
